TThis is a pretty and unusual cocktail that does require some possibly hard-to-find ingredients. The special appeal of this cocktail had been lost to history until Rothman & Winter revived the lost manufacture of Crème de Violette (a liqueur colored and flavored with violet blossoms). Fortunately, there are now several companies making Crème de Violette and you should be able to find it at most large liquor stores.

Ingredients #

You may tinker with the proportions as you like. If you get just the right ratio of Crème de Violette to everything else, the drink will the pale, dusty blue of the early evening’s eastern sky. Just a bit more, and the drink will be violet.

  • 2 ½ oz. gin
  • ½ oz. Luxardo or another Maraschino liqueur (not cherry liqueur)
  • ¼ oz. Crème de Violette
  • ¾ oz. strained fresh lemon juice

Instructions #

Fill a shaker with ice and add all of the ingredients. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry if desired.
