This dish comes together in mere minutes, and is savory, homey, and just delicious. It’s one of my all-time favorites. The egg is optional, but makes the dish a very filling and complete meal.

My Meatloaf

There are countless versions of this American standard, but I think mine is particularly good. It’s as well suited for company as for a weeknight supper.

For a great dish for an intimate dinner party, Osso Buco is hard to beat — veal is always elegant, but this slow easy braise is mostly complete well in advance and requires little last-minute fiddling. The tomato, fennel, and citrus zests keep this sauce fragrant and bright-tasting. Serve this over mashed potatoes, steamed rice, or a plain risotto.

These savory little packets are made up of thin slices of beef filled with onions, peppers, and savory bread crumbs, rolled tight and braised until tender. It’s an intensely flavorful and elegant dish made from inexpensive ingredients.
